This one is about addiction; being dependent on things that are actually doing you harm. About the inability or unwillingness to give something up, even though itis bad for you or perhaps even potentially life-shortening – a “strange, romantic suicide”. It’s a very serious lyric which is well-suited to the dramatic musical progression. I had bits of this song in my head for quite a few years before I finally recorded it for the first time. The song was afforded “Highly Commended” status in the 2017 UK Songwriting Competition, made it into the national top 20 in the 2017 Songs Alive song competition, and was also a semi-finalist in the 2019 Song of the Year competition, so I guess some people liked it.
