It was the final night of one of PlanB's China tours and we were in Beijing awaiting our flight back to Adelaide the next day. At the place we were staying, there was a large book of photographic portraits of well known people. Picking up the book it fell open to a rather searing black and white portrait of Wynton Marsalis staring out at the reader. For some reason this inspired the opening line "Wynton Marsalis stared into the darkness/ and all he could see was the light". This line remained just that for several months until at a regular songwriting session with friend Corey Stewart I was scratching around for some way to start a new song and this line came back to mind. Corey liked the idea and the song was completed quickly in a single session. - Adrian
